Buque de Papel: Ulf, gracias por subir a bordo de Buque de Papel. Comencemos por preguntar para quienes no lo conocen en estas latitudes ¿quién es Ulf Wakenius, cómo puede describirse a sí mismo?

Ulf Wakenius: ¡soy guitarrista y compositor de Gotemburgo-Suecia! He sido muy afortunado de poder jugar con muchos de mis héroes. Como Oscar Peterson, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker. Me encanta difundir mi música a diferentes culturas. Me sentí muy afortunado de poder hacer lo que más amo, tocar la guitarra y viajar.

B.P.: Ulf, ¿desde cuándo el jazz llegó a su vida? ¿Cómo ha sido su relación con este género musical?

U.W.: el jazz entró en mi vida cuando tenía 15 años. Me ha llevado a darle la vuelta al mundo. Empecé a tocar blues, luego se convirtió en jazz fusión, y después jazz como tal. Y, por supuesto, he tomado por muchas otras direcciones. También la música brasileña se convirtió en un gran amor.

Agarré la guitarra cuando tenía 12 años y nunca miré hacia atrás. Me ha llevado por todo el mundo y he conocido a muchas personas maravillosas gracias a ello, ¡así que le debo mucho!

B.P.: ¿Siempre con la guitarra y en este género?, ¿Qué música se escucha en Suecia?

U.W.: creo que muchos suecos están orgullosos de grupos de pop como ABBA y Roxette.

Los suecos son bastante fuertes en el campo del pop. ¡Pero tenemos muchos grandes músicos de jazz y músicos tradicionales! ¡La música folclórica sueca es maravillosa!

Suecia tiene, debido a su tradición, un gran auge musical con las escuelas comunitarias, donde se formaron muchos grandes músicos. Estoy muy feliz de haber crecido en Suecia y haber tenido acceso a este programa.

B.P.: Ulf, usted ha tenido una larga trayectoria en el mundo del jazz y ha trabajado y colaborado con destacados músicos como Oscar Peterson y Ray Brown. ¿Cuéntenos cómo ha sido su relación con los cuartetos y tríos del jazz como los de estos dos músicos renombrados?

U.W.: ¡es un sueño hecho realidad! Para un guitarrista de jazz unirse a Oscar Peterson Group, es el equivalente a que un guitarrista de rock se una a los Rolling Stones. Es un tremendo honor, le ha dado forma a mi vida y estoy muy agradecido por ello. Tanto Oscar Peterson como Ray Brown fueron, además de genios en su instrumento, extremadamente generosos. Han ayudado a muchos músicos jóvenes y siempre les estaré agradecido.

B.P.: ¿Recuerda de su participación en Eurovisión, en 1985, tocando en los entreactos con el grupo de Peter Almqvist?

U.W.: ¡sí! ¡Mucho! ¡Tocamos "Live" para 200 a 300 millones de espectadores! ¡No volverá a pasar! Fue una ocasión muy rara, que permitieran que un dúo de guitarras llegara a esa gran audiencia. 

En ese momento el panorama de los medios era muy diferente porque destacaban la calidad de los músicos y había productores valientes y visionarios. Hoy nunca lo veo, se ha vuelto realmente malo. Elijo recordar los momentos en que fue genial.

B.P.: Vámonos para Brasil y su encuentro con Sivuca, con quien hubo tres colaboraciones y grabaciones. “Aquarela Do Brazil (1985)”, “Citas in Rio” (1986) y “Let's Vamos” (1987). ¿Cómo fue trabajar con este referente de la música brasileña, del jazz brasileño? ¿Qué anécdota recuerda de sus vivencias con él, que era un personaje especial?

U.W.: Me enamoré de la música brasileña cuando tenía alrededor de 25 años.

Fui a Rio de Janeiro 1985 para grabar mi primer disco en solitario. ”Aquarela Do Brasil”. ¡Fue una aventura increíble! ¡La ciudad y la música me noquearon! Fue entonces cuando conocí a Sivuca y quien participó en mi disco.

¡Creo que la música brasileña es mágica! Sivuca tenía buen humor y solía decir, "soy un sustituto de Santa Claus". Toda mi aventura con Brasil ha sido extraordinaria desde el principio y espero poder regresar lo antes posible a este fantástico país.

B.P.: Ulf, ¿cree que la música no tiene fronteras?, ¿Qué recuerda del trabajo de Tokio Blue?, y también tiene discos llamados, "Toronto 2 PM," Buenos Aires," "The New World", etc… 

U.W.: La música definitivamente no tiene fronteras e interpreto aires de 20 nacionalidades diferentes.

Toqué en el Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires con Oscar Peterson y ¡fue una gran experiencia! Argentina también es un gran país. Nunca olvidaré los enormes bifes (bistecs) que comí en Buenos Aires.

B.P.: Hemos visto homenajes que ha hecho a Cole Porter, Jango Reinhardt y Chick Corea… ¿Cómo ha preparado dichos homenajes? 

U.W.: arreglo y practico las melodías. Intento poner algo propio.

Busco desarrollar las cosas y practicar y desarrollarme todo el tiempo. Si puedes aprender algo nuevo, todos los días, ¡es una gran victoria! ¡Todos los días cuando tomo la guitarra es una gran victoria!

B.P.: Finalmente, veo en sus redes y en Messenger que está promocionando algo que se llama “Taste of honey”. ¿Es su nuevo grupo, o su nuevo álbum?

U.W.: Taste Of Honey (ACT) es mi nuevo disco en solitario. ¡Es un tributo a Sir Paul McCartney! Hemos tratado de poner nuestra letra sueca en su música y creo que lo logramos. ¡Estoy muy feliz por el disco!

B.P.: Ulf, envíe un mensaje para los seguidores y navegantes de Buque de Papel

Buque de Papel: Ulf, thank you for coming aboard the Buque de Papel. Let's start by asking for those who do not know him in these latitudes who is Ulf Wakenius, how can he describe himself?

Ulf Wakenius: Im a guitar player and composer from Gothenburg-Sweden! I have been very fortunate to be able to play with many of my heroes. Such as Oscar Peterson, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker. I love to spread my music to different cultures. I fell very fortunate to be able to do what I cherish most, playing guitar and travel.

B.P.: Ulf, since when did jazz come into your life? How has your relationship with this musical genre been?

U.W.: Jazz came in to my life when i was 15-years old. It has taken my around the world. I started to play blues, then it became jazz fusion. then jazz. And of course many other directions. Also Brazilian music became a strong love.

I picked up the guitar when I was 12-years old and never looked back.

I has taken me around the world and have meet many wonderful people because of it, so I owe it a lot!

B.P.: Always with the guitar and in this genre? What music is listened to in Sweden?

U.W.: I think many Swede´s are proud of the pop groups like ABBA and Roxette.

Swedens are quite strong in the Pop field. But we have many great jazz musicians and Traditional musicians! Swedish folk music is wonderful!

Sweden has because of its tradition with (Community Schools brought up many great musicians!) I very happy to have grown up in Sweden and have access to this.

B.P.: Ulf, you have had a long history in the jazz world and have worked and collaborated with prominent musicians such as Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown. Tell us about your relationship with jazz quartets and trios like these two renowned musicians?

U.W.: It is a dream come through! For a Jazzguitarist to join Oscar Peterson Group, is equivalent a rock guitar player to join Rolling Stones. I tremendous honor. It has shaped my life and im extremely grateful for it. Both Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown was besides being genius on their instrument extremely generous.

They have helped many young musicians, and I will always be grateful to them.

B.P.: Do you remember of your participation in Eurovision, in 1985, playing in the intermissions with Peter Almqvist's group?

U.W.: Yes! Very much so! We played ”Live” for 200-300 million viewers! It will never happen again! It was a very rare occasion, that they were letting a guitar duo reaching that large audience. At that time the media landscape was very different , more based on quality + brave and visionary producers.Today I never watch it, it has become a really bad. I choose to remember the times when it was great. 

B.P.: Let's go to Brazil and its meeting with Sivuca… with whom there were three collaborations and recordings. “Aquarela Do Brazil (1985)”, “Citas in Rio” (1986) and “Let's Vamos” (1987)… What was it like working with this benchmark of Brazilian music, of Brazilian jazz? What anecdote do you remember about your experiences with him, that he was a special character?

U.W.: I fell in love with Brazilian music when I was around 25 years old. 



I went to Rio de Janeiro 1985 to record my first solo record. ”Aquarela Do Brazil”. That was an amazing adventure! The city and the music knocked me out! That’s when I met Sivuca and he participated on my record.

I think Brazilian music is magic! Sivuca had good humor and used to say ”Im a standin for Santa Claus”. My whole adventure with Brazil has been extraordinary from the beginning and I hope I can get back as soon as possible to this fantastic country.

B.P.: Ulf, do you think music has no borders? What do you remember from Tokio Blue's work? And you also have albums called, "Toronto 2 PM," Buenos Aires, "" The New World ", etc...

U.W.: Music has most definitely has no boarders. I play with 20 different nationalities.

I played at Teatro Colon I Buenos Aires with Oscar Peterson and that was a huge experience! Argentina is also a great country. I will never forget the huge steaks I got in Buenos Aires.

B.P.: We have seen tributes you have done to Cole Porter, Jango Reinhardt and Chick Corea. How have you prepared these tributes?

U.W.: I arrange and practice on the tunes. I try to put in something of my own.

I try to develop things and practice and develop myself all the time. If you can learn something new, everyday, it is a huge win! Everyday when I pick up the guitar it is a huge victory!

B.P.: Finally, I see on your networks and on Messenger that you are promoting something called “Taste of honey”… is it your new group, or your new album? 

U.W.: Taste Of Honey(ACT) is my new solo record! It is a tribute to Sir Paul McCartney! We have tried to put in our Swedish lyric in to his music and I think we succeed. I very happy about the record!
